I have several Cleveland kits waiting in the wings. I'm glad to see you building one of them. The P-80 (or F-80 during the Korean War) is such a beautiful plane. This looks really sharp.

Ahoy David Looking mighty great you turned this old kit of a bygone age in to a masterpiece Hardy Well done. boats

Thanks, guys! I know you have several kits....including that Berkeley Skyray which I would kill you for but....I don't remember anything about building this kit 54 years ago but I do remember what it looked like. My only recent experience with a Cleveland kit is the Mig-15 in my hanger and it was a "Simplex" kit. There's quite a bit more to this one and I believe their larger kits are much, much more. While there's great detail of the front landing gear, there's basically only plain Jane for the main gears. There are no instructions for the jet intake construction, only a drawing of the assembly. And there is nothing about the bottom, at all. Suffice to say, this is not a kit for newbies. Still it's not that much different from many other kits which are designed for flight and I have a feeling that it will all make perfect sense as it comes together. The really surprising thing is that the wood is all very good, certainly better than in some modern kits. Boats, it's a long way from being any kind of piece but I do actually think a model is appealing just in bones.:-)

This was one of Cleveland's "IT" or Industrial Training kits. for all it's apparent complexity it is simpler than their main line kits. I have the FH, Phantom, on the shelf. The Phantom had two small engines buried in the wing roots... the complexity of the fuselage framing in that area is something else.

The complexity wouldn't bother me but that means there are many parts and many of them are small and cutting them out from the printwood can be really challenging because they are printed so close together. It would be an entirely different matter if the parts were laser cut!:-) There are also many "make from" moments, such as: On the front gear the scissors type thing for the shock absorber for this kit. The plans say, "Make from scrap metal". Right!! I see that a lot in kits and it's always frustrating. I can barely see it!!!

Yes, it's like the math textbook that presents an equation that covers half the page followed by a sentence that begins, "The student will easily see..."
