The P-80 became the F-80 when the Air Force became a separate branch of service, September 18, 1947. That's when the red stripe in the stars & bars insignia was added, as well. Like David wrote, after 1947 it was switched to "F" for "Fighter". I still haven't figured out the difference was between "A" for "Attack" (A-20, A-10 Warthog) and "B" for "Bomber" (B-17, B-1).
