Well it flew for the first time today after the engine swap, and what a difference ! It has no problem taking off (unlike my DR1) and climbs almost straight up at full throttle. It cruises at 33% throttle and at that rate should last ~10 minutes in the FlightPower 350 2 cell. At 50% throttle it lasts in a test case (on the ground) for 6 minutes with enough reserve to land. The engine and prop act as a brake (no engine brake, prop just free-running) without throttle, and if you want to glide this one you will need a folding prop. Control surfaces move ~30 degrees (+/-) and this provides very good control, it turns on a dime and loops just fine. Landings are easy at low throttle. C.G. is at 50% of the chord, which is ahead of the recommended point (!). This plane is great for park flying and in your front yard.

yeah - I guess if I had to do it again I would follow conventional wisdom and leave the vertical stab alone and cut out the elevator... the horizontal stabilizer just looked so nice, and I did not feel like chopping it up ! looking back it was an odd decision - it is not easier this way. Once the lipos arrive it will be up and away, my older Kokam 600mAh can not handle the load of the motor. I would also use carbon push-rods like my DR-1 to keep the tail lighter. I did replace the steel skid with a simple carbon rod in this revision. I can see red white and black looking very stylish for such a classic plane ! look forward to seeing your (mleduc) plane posted as well.

Awesome looking with the new wheels and motor set up. I have to ask, why did you chose to modify the vertical stab to fit the plank elevator rather than do a cut-out in the elevator? Is it just easier that way?...inquiring minds want to know. I'm already planning a red, white and black scheme for mine. :-)

Wow! A nice looking flyer. Can't wait to see it in the air.

Looks like a very neat installation.

As I said previously, I really like it. I have been wanting to get into the park-flier deal for a while and haven't been to excited about getting started with RTF foamies as I have been building Guillows and Comet kits since I was a kid and think it would be a cop out to go that easy way and not suffer a teeth gritting crash or two. I would have my eye on a red and white scheme for my Arrow and I'd really love to see some in flight photos of yours if you get the opportunity, though I'm more than grateful to see what you have accomplished here so far... It has been very informative.

This was my first rubber-band to RC electric conversion project, the plans are very simple and the volume of the fuselage is such that you can easily position equipment in various places to get the right CG. It has such a classic look as well and it stands out as such. The plane requires some modifications to be able to work with the added weight, and as you see there are some areas I added thin sheeting or carbon for the higher wing loading. The elevator and rudder are the areas where most of the creative changes took place, and possibly there are better ways to make the needed changes. It may be a good idea to go to a more optimal symmetric airfoil on the horizontal stabilizer, and a total redesign on the vertical (move it forward?) to avoid the odd rudder cutout for the moving surface on the elevator. The gear is a bit soft, and the stringers in the fuselage are a bit delicate. The flying surfaces are however very solid. Once you figure out where the CG is it flies very mild mannered. It lends itself to very fun and colorful color schemes ! and it sure looks unusual. I have the new motor and ESC and will work on the power upgrade tonight.

This is a great looking plane. I have been lurking here for a while and am very curious to see how this turns out as I am looking for a good "starter" electric rc project and the venerable Arrow has been beckoning me from my Guillows stash. If this turns out to be an unsuitable first time project please let me know. To my eye it looks like it would have benign flight characteristics. But great job! I'm blown away.

oh, and do not use these wheels, way to flimsy. Switching to Maxx EPW125. On another note - this plane has a (classic) lifting horiz. stabilizer.

Arrow conversion - now being changed to Hacker A10-15S and Thunderbird-6 ESC for more climbing power - will try to see if 350mAh 2S LIPO will balance nose or not - project (Hacker) just started today

in first form (with DJ Aerotech MPS2 motor) and 800mAh LIPO it was ~ 120g

battery hatch with "spring" latch - fits 800mAh lipo if desired
