I have been working 12 hour days for a month now and have another month at least to go. So, I retired the Piper for now and cleared out my work space to start on my Hellcat. I also have a control line plane on the way. Don't know how I am going to find the time...

I don't think the Piper is going to outrun the Mustang for long...

At first I thought it said 'The cat is for sale'. :) Great work Marlinus, the Cub looks great.

This plane may be simple by some standards and nowhere near the museum quality of the masters on this site, but I am finding great peace and pleasure in making them. I hope they can someday be inspirations to my grandkids and make them take up a very worthwhile hobby. So many lessons to be learned making these models, and this is the kind of thing we need to make sure is carried on into the next generations. Attention to detail, following directions, finishing what you started, pride in workmanship, artistic expression, creativity. Top that video games...:)

I think I will add the remaining wing supports, shocks, and air vent. Possibly do some panel lines, change to a black prop and add decals. Then I suppose it will be finished and ready for the air. Haven't weighed it, but it seems light and i tried to build it with more intent on flying this time. She should definitely out perform the Mustang I built. far too much paint and not enough sanding turned the P-51 into an anchor...

A belly shot. Usually very painful if not treated right away :)

My second balsa kit has taught me a few more things and shown me a few more mistakes I can improve upon my next build. I am going to tackle the Hell Cat by guillows next.

A wee bit more work done.

The Cat is for scale. She thinks the Piper is her personal playtoy. i caught her try to spin the prop!

You've done quite well for your first balsa plane. I think you'll find the Hellcat even more fun since it looks a bit more realistic than this. Your covering all looks great so you've answered your own question about how tight it should be. As to sanding...only as much as necessary to make it all smooth and straight. Sanding blocks and a T-bar sander are essential tools. On a side note, the cactus in the painting on the right is a Prickly Pear and is everywhere around here. And on another note, you asked about experiences in modeling so I'll switch to another pic to share some of mine.

Amazing how something so light can be so sturdy
